The 2008 Cannabis Cup is set up so that instead of getting all your weed in one location, everyone walks around the city visiting the different coffee shops and picks up their samples one at a time. Sometimes you end up staying for a while and other times you just run in and out really quick and head to the next shop.
2 or 3 days into our trip my wife and I decided to hit a whole bunch of coffee shops in a single afternoon and Rookies was one of those shops. The plan was to quickly buy a sample of their Cup entry and make our way pretty much to the other side of town. Once I walked into Rookies I knew we would be rearranging the schedule for the rest of the day. Fortunately when you are in Amsterdam, that is not hard to do. At least for us is wasn’t. Everything is just so laid back.
The vibe in Rookies is very chill. The place is medium size with a pool table and plenty of seating inside. It actually reminded me of a local bar back home. The service was fantastic which is something that I cannot say for all of the shops we visited. Rookies has outdoor seating although not too popular in the middle of winter. I can easily see myself grabbing a table at noon on a hot sunny day and not leaving until the sun went down.
While at Rookies my wife ordered up some Hot Chocolate and Dutch Apple Pie for us to munch on and man, it was incredible. Normally I’d say it may have been the fact that I was RIPPED on some of their Rosiha (Super Silver Haze) but my wife was close to sober and she agreed, some of the best munchies we had in Amsterdam.
We ended up spending a little over and hour at Rookies just hanging out at chatting with people we had been bumping into on and off the previous couple days. The Rosiha that was entered was fantastic. A solid sativa that I ended up buying an extra gram of for the road. You can read the full review of Rosiha for a little more detail on the bud. Sativa’s dominated the 2008 Cannabis Cup and Rookies entry held it’s own in my opinion.
Next time I am in Amsterdam I will be hitting up Rookies for sure, if for no other reason than to get some apple pie. I wish I would have sampled some of their other offerings but I was “fat and happy” with the Rosiha. As usual they had plenty to offer and I am sure it was all just as good as the Rosiha.
Looking back on my trip there are some tell-tale signs that certain spots were a lot more fun than others. 1 of those signs is a lack of details in my notes on a certain shop or strain. Pretty much that means that I was A) so damn baked that I forgot to write stuff, or B) that I was having too much fun to bother.
At Rookies I think it was a little bit of both. When you combine great bud, stony hash, some delicious munchies and sweet drinks with some great service and attention to detail what you end up with is a great coffee shop where good times are bound to be had. If I had to compare one coffee shop to ‘Cheers‘ this would be the one. Good job Rookies! –Chubbs
Grade: A
Pros: Great service, damn good apple pie, friendly staff, good weed, nice selection, good music and relax atmosphere, outdoor seating
Cons: The usual – no atm or credit cards, house bongs were a little ‘rough’

Apple pie sounds amazing. The dutch really are on point when it comes to drinks and desserts. The hot chocolate at each shop usually comes loaded with whip creme, cinnamon, and cookies. Nothing better after a potent spliff. Missed Rookies on the last trip but will make sure I visit in the summer.
Looks like a great place to chill.
a chill spot indeed, their sneeuwitje last year was beastly, think it was a white widow hybrid from what i remember. Rookies is definitely a shop worth visiting, i know i’ll be back next time i’m in the dam :]
looks like a cool spot for sure
Wish i could go right now!
