Founded in the early 1970’s, coffee shop Mellow Yellow holds the title as the first ever herb friendly coffee shop in the Amsterdam. Here we are appx. 35 years later and they are still chugging right along. My wife and I stopped in Mellow Yellow one night with some friends of ours from the UK. We had just come from Barney’s which was packed so we were a little surprised when we walked in and realized we were the only ones there.
This is a really big shop so when it’s empty, it feels like a ghost town. Mellow Yellow is located on a very busy street about a 20 minute walk from where I did most of my partying down by central station. The neighborhood is a little more industrial compared to most and I think that may have a bit to do with why nobody was there. Fortunately for me, I don’t need a lot of people to get the party started, I was rolling “strapped”!
Obviously there was no line at the bar so I walked right up and asked to see some of their 2008 Cannabis Cup entry Bubblegum Haze. There are few strains in my opinion that really live up to their fruity or candy like names. Bubblegum Haze is definitely one that does. The bud tender handed me a nug that smelled and felt like a big chewed up piece of Big League Chew.
I made the trek to Mellow Yellow just to get some of this Haze that everyone was talking about so when I got some, my one track mind took over and I completely forgot to sample some of their other goods. Which really sucks because if I recall correctly, the menu was fat. 
I took my 2 grams and headed to a table we had in the back of the shop. Mellow Yellow is well lit and easily has the potential to be a great spot. I am guessing that with the outdoor seating it’s probably one of the more popular summer hang outs. The picnic style table we had worked perfect for the session I was about to have.
After emptying my pockets I had about a quarter of bud made up of 6 or 7 different strains as well as a few grams of different hash’s. On top of that I had the 2 grams of Bubblegum Haze. I had planned on using one of the house Volcano’s to start things off but after having a look at the state their bags were in I declined. Ended up smoking 2 thick hash joints while I broke up 1 gram of the Bubblegum Haze.

In the 45 minutes that we spent getting high in Mellow Yellow I think I saw may 4 or 5 customers come in and buy some bud, none stayed to smoke. The Bubblegum Haze made it worth the trip but to be honest, I was a little disappointed. At a time when other shops were raging, Mellow Yellow was dead.
The fact that they are one of the pioneers of herb culture in Amsterdam along with their insanely sticky Bubblegum Haze really earned them the solid A- that I gave them. Like I mentioned earlier, I think this would be a pretty cool spot to hang out during the summer and I am looking forward to sitting outside one day hitting a big sloppy Bubblegum Haze joint.
It would really be a unique feeling sitting outside on such a major/busy street while coughing violently from the huge tokes I take. All the while having a tall pile just sitting on the table like it was a Green salad. Mellow Yellow is a unique coffee shop that in my opinion deserves respect for the simple fact that it’s older than most of it’s patrons.
Overall I’d say that to give Mellow Yellow a truly “Honest and Accurate” review I’d have to go back during a really busy summer day. But for the most part I think I got a good feel for the shop and what kind of vibe it has. At the end of the day is this a place where I could see me self partying? Definitely! 
The next time you are in Amsterdam stop by Mellow Yellow and try the Bubblegum Haze. If you like super sticky, very chunky green nugs, this is the spot for you. –Chubbs

I really liked this spot chubbs, I also grabbed the bubblegum haze when I was there and smoked it with a snake of hash. Bud was tasty and staff was friendly.

It was killer but man, had it been cured properly it would have been devastating.
The bubblegum haze we had was very, very, good. I remember that we forgot to bring the grinder we had bought so had to break it up by hand—huge problem, the shit was so sticky and resinous that you had to really scrub it off your fingers before attempting to twist the j or else you were going to rip the thin papers haha. Great smoke though, remember it being more bubblegum tasting then haze. Mellow Yellow is a hike from the city center but worth it with this quality of buds.
Trust me, even with a grinder you would of had issues. Some seriously sticky weed.
Picked up some SSH last spring and it was top notch. Perfect cure. Tasted great through the whole, pure 1g joint. Got some Cheeze as well. Top notch shop. Didn’t stay though.

I’m jealous Chubbs. I didn’t “discover” this shop until my last visit, wish I could head back soon. I’ve seen a menu from 2008. Is there a way to post menu pics on this site?
Really nice atmosphere, there is an upstairs towards the back of the counter with a pinball machine as well.
Also, this shop is franchised with The Noon, similar menu, but they offer a cheaper discount on multiple grams of Blueberry. I believe both shops have a Blueberry Haze, which is supposed to be top notch. For indicas, I’ve heard the Pot of Gold is the one to get. A little pricey for an indica, but sounds like it might be on par with L.A. Con, just a sweeter taste.
They also have a Trainwreck strain. Those from the States might be a little disappointed, as it’s mostly indica.

great shop. one of my faves. its a nice walk from dam square. the best super silver haze in the city imo. their bubble gum haze was also superb. 4 grams of blueberry for 24 euro is one of the best deals in the city.
Pasted mellow yellow each night on way back to hotel. Picked up a pre rolled silver haze j each time. Best way to end the day!! Good friendly coffee shop. Great menu. Thumbs up!!
