Even if Grey Area had not been on this years Cannabis Cup tour, I still would have stopped by. Not only does their reputation proceed them, it turns out my hotel was like a 20 second walk away on the same street. I had a great time each of the 4 times I went to Grey Area. It’s definitely a shop I will be hitting up every time I am in Amsterdam.
Grey Area is the only coffee shop in Amsterdam owned and operated by Americans. That being said, you’d never know it once you walk in the door. The decor, the partying, the vibe all scream Amsterdam. With 3 or 4 tables that each seat 3 comfortably and 4 squeezed in, it is probably the smallest coffee shop you’ll visit. Each time I stopped by there was a line 5-10 deep that ran right out the front door onto the street.
It is not unusual to see a small group of people gathering outside starting at about 11:45am eagerly awaiting the opening of the narrow front door. Once inside you can’t help but feel like partying. With it being so small it has a very intimate yet busy vibe. For the 2008 Cannabis Cup, Grey Area had 2 entries. The first was their weed entry which was called Grey Martian. I had a few tight nugs that got me way baked when smoked through one of Grey Area’s house bongs.
Their second entry was called Grey Crystal and was one of the more potent hash’s I smoked all week. It ended up taking 3rd place in the neder hash category. When mixed, the Grey Martian / Grey Crystal combo can be very dangerous. I sat down at a table in the corner with a house bong. The bong was a 24" RooR with ice notches, nothing special but hit killer. I was packing FAT bowls of Grey Martian with a nice layer of Grey Crystal on top. Phew! It was so strong that at one point I had to step outside for some fresh air.

Location wise, Grey Area is situated right in the middle of where you want to be in my opinion. There are at least 6 or 7 other high quality coffee shops within a 10 minute walk. Overall I’d say the only thing I did not like about Grey Area is how small the shop is. Don’t get me wrong, if you are lucky enough to get a seat, it is a very chill spot to kick back and get really high. I can’t wait to stop by sometime other than during The Cannabis Cup and see how chill it is. I am betting it only gets better!
Oh and one other thing that I really liked. Because the shop is so small, it only takes a overhead air filter that hangs above the front door to keep the shop pretty much smoke free. I like a thick hotbox, but when you are blazing sick bud all day, every day sometimes you appreciate the clean air. All-in-all, Grey Area makes it as a Top Pick for being one of the best coffee shops in Amsterdam. –Chubbs

Yeah, it’s really tight in there especially during The Cup and ther eis a line out the door.
But I still really like the place.
How were their house bongs? I only saw 2 coffeeshops in Amsterdam that had bongs you could use for free(some had bongs for sale). One I think was called Anyday Anytime, they had really bomb ass vaporizers that ran through water. It was called a ver damper and got me unbelievably stoned. The other place was Dampkring. They had these shitty handlegrip pieces that were glass on rubber and had a horrible seal. Besides those 2 experiences I only smoked joints and out of a roor steamroller I bought.

Top 3 coffeeshop in the Dam. Unreal selection and friendly staff. Must visit if in the Netherlands.

id recommend just picking up bud from here and walking to amnesia to enjoy which is just around the corner
