I admit, at first I did not think I was going to like De Rokerij for 2 reasons. The map I had listed it’s street address as 1 not 41 and it took me FOREVER to find the damn place even though I was right next to it.
And second, it’s located in a bit of a touristy section of the city. Until the recent closures, there was a HUGE Bulldog Cafe right around the corner. And from what I understand, it does not get any more touristy than The Bulldog.
Once I finally found the place I knew right away that I was at a cool spot. When we arrived they had some Jimmy Hendrix playing at a reasonable level. I had no problem having a normal conversation without having to yell. The decor is set up so that you feel like you are in a Moroccan nightclub. There are rich colored drapes and hookah’s all around. With enough seating for at least 50 people we had no problems finding a place to sit down. The only downside is that 2 of the seats were little wooden tree stumps that wrecked your back.
One of the things I really, REALLY like about De Rokerij is the fruit girl. About an hour after we got there and well into a fat buzz one of the girl’s that works there came out of the back room with a giant tray of sliced up fresh fruit. Let me tell you did it ever hit the spot. Big chunks of pineapple and a few slices of apple will do wonders for cotton mouth. I was right by the door she came out of so I got first dibs on the tray. I am not sure I’d of liked it as much if I was the last person to get some. Especially after everyone’s hands have been all over the tray.
De Rokerij’s entry into the 2008 Cannabis Cup was a hybrid called Brainstorm Haze x G13. A decent bud that got you high but could of been a lot better. I think they just entered it in The Cup to get all the traffic that comes along with being in The Cup. I don’t think they were actually trying to win anything. At least I hope not.
I’d say of the 20 or so coffee shops that I visited while in Amsterdam, De Rokerij is one of the most unique and is one that I will be hitting up again when I am in the city. The vibe is one that cannot be missed and I’ll go as far as to say it’s one of the most chill spots in the city. I honestly cannot wait to get back and give some of their other weed/hash offerings a try. –Chubbs

One of my faves for sure. Been hitting this joint since 2000. Yeah the location is pretty touristy and the place can get packed at nite. Last trip I had their Sour D, nice lemony fresh scent, but didn’t come through in taste though. I’ve always like the atmosphere here, best shop in this area I’d say.
