Even though it won The Cup last year I was expecting/hoping Arjan was going to have something new.

Either way, take a look at the 2009 Cannabis Cup winning strain, Super Lemon Haze.

Name: Super Lemon Haze

From: The Greenhouse (Coffee Shop – Amsterdam)

Grade: A-

Type: Sativa

Price: Appx. $15/Gram

Looks: Very tight nugs. Some as big as a golf ball and absolutely covered in thick yellow trichomes.

Smell: Very strong Haze/pine smell with overpowering lemon undertones. Very sweet. One of the best smelling buds in Amsterdam.

Taste: Like lemon heads candy when vaporized. Very sweet when smoked in a bong. Little hashy on the exhale.

Buzz Type: Prototypical sativa high. Very heady with a slight boost of energy.

Buzz Length: Medium. Good session with Super Lemon Haze usually kept me high for a little over and hour.

Overall: Definitely one of the better Haze/sativas in Amsterdam. When vaped it tastes a lot like candy.

Buzz Report: I smoked a lot of Super Lemon Haze while in Amsterdam and after a while I found myself not really getting as high as I liked.

The solution to the issue was to start rolling big snakes of hash and adding them to my SLH joints. Worked out great.  –Chubbs

So here is a little breakdown of how it went down (from what I can remember) with a few pics from our last shop of the crawl. (I am not going to mention anyone’s name’s or nickname’s specifically. They can do that)

We sent out an email before we left to everyone that had contacted Mrs. Chubbs saying they would be in Amsterdam for the 2009 Cannabis Cup and wanted to attend the crawl.

Mrs. Chubbs really likes Dampkring so we decided to start the crawl there at 4:20pm.

Well, for those of you that have never been to Amsterdam, there are 2 Dampkring locations.

Mrs. Chubbs was under the impression she did a good job of letting people know exactly which of the 2 Dampkring’s to go to but of course there was some confusion.

We showed up at Dampkring #1 around 4:00 with our MR sweatshirts on and walked upstairs.

We had just finished a huge breakfast of both sweet (powder sugar) and savory (cheese and bacon) dutch pancakes and were ready to party.

We happened to sit down next to the 1 person that was already there waiting for us.

He mentioned his name and that he was waiting for “Chubbs”. I introduced myself and then lit up a FAT joint and unpacked my rented RooR. It was great.

At 4:30, when no one else had shown up, we knew there was probably an issue with the location and decided to hang out.

Luckily we did because at around 5:00 4 more “crawlers” that had been waiting at Dampkring #2 arrived.

Everyone that showed up was very cool, very down to earth and Mrs. Chubbs and I really had a good time hanging out/blazing with everyone at Dampkring but it was time to move on.

We had a bit of a loose plan but after hearing about a couple specific strains, we decided to make our way over to the 420 Cafe in search of the 420 Kush. (Forgot to photograph the 420 Kush)

We walked into the 420 Cafe and it was packed with very little available seating so we all grabbed a few grams of the 420 Kush and walked across the street/alley to De Kroon.

De Kroon had generated a bit of a buzz with their version of OG Kush (review coming soon) and I was anxious to give it a shot.

The 7 of us found a really cool spot in the back of De Kroon to kick back and that is where I decided Hash Bash 2009 was on!

In addition to the pretty good OG Kush from De Kroon and the 420 Kush from the 420 Cafe, this incredible session consisted of a whole bunch of the eventual Cup winning strain Super Lemon Haze as well as at least 5 or 6 more strains that everyone pitched in.

This was not a session for beginners.

The reason I called it Hash Bash 2009 is all the hash that was smoked (Obviously).

I had a ton of hash in my bag and I needed to make room.

I broke out with 5 or 6 different kinds of hash and who knows how many more everyone else added. Take a look:

It’s not that often that you get to hang out in a chill spot, with a group of cool people you just met and have what I thought was a really good time.

So check this out. As we are sitting in the very back of De Kroon blazing HEAVILY (we had it SO hotboxed), this little stoner cat comes walking down the stairs.

Stoner Cat looks around and apparently decided we had the best sesh’ going because he jumped up on the stool that was right next to me and kicked back for a while. It was VERY COOL.

There was something about either him or the look on his face that had me and one other crawler in tears as we were laughing so hard. Good Times. 

It seemed as though time stood still while we were there. It was awesome.

It was almost simultaneously that we all looked at each other and decided we needed to eat.

Mrs. Chubbs and I wanted to thank everyone that attended the 2009 Marijuana Reviews Cannabis Cup Coffee Shop Crawl and even those of you that waited at Dampkring #2 and never made it. Sorry for the mix up.

After the crawl, Mrs. Chubbs and I headed over to this great little Italian restaurant called Caprese (review coming soon) for dinner and dessert.

Take a look at this dessert. It was so damn good that I had to take pictures of it. (We literally ordered 1 of every dessert on the menu)

We’ll be at the 2010 Cannabis Cup with an even bigger presence than this year and you can bet we’ll be hosting another Cannabis Cup Coffee Shop Crawl so start planning for next year.  –Chubbs

Unfortunately due to either a really slow internet connection, or some insanely high firewall settings (not sure which) I was unable to get videos to complete the upload process while in Amsterdam.

It was so discouraging that I ended up not taking nearly as much video footage as I had planned.

Either way, take a look at some of the videos that I did make.

Nothing special, just a glimpse into what it is like to attend the Cannabis Cup.

As you can see lighting was definitely one of my main issues.

I am already in the planning stages for next years trip.

Never again will I rely on my hotel’s internet connection.

I know it’s not a whole lot of video but it’s better than nothing. Amsterdam is a great city and I really wish I had time to visit during the summer.  –Chubbs

Amsterdam is overrated.

I know I posted a bunch of stuff while there that said it was awesome and that I was getting tore up left and right and for the most part it was true.

But man, did I have to smoke a ton to get high.

I did not really want to say anything while in Amsterdam for 2 reasons.

A) I really like a couple of the coffee shops and did not want to get banned while in Amsterdam.

B) I was in a bit of denial after just having spent thousands of dollars to make the trip possible.

Last year I attended the 2008 Cannabis Cup pretty much as a stoner on a mission.  Yes, I had a lot more experience than most when it came to being able to tell fire from schwag, but nothing like this year.

The 2009 Cannabis Cup was a much different trip.

This year I went to the The Cup not only as the owner of MarijuanaReviews.com, but thanks to the success of NUGGETRY, one of, if not the most experienced non-celebrity judge in attendance. (I probably know more than most of the celebrity judges even)

One my flight home last year, I remember thinking “man, this sucks…how am I going to be able to smoke the herb I have access to at home after spending a week smoking the best weed in the world?”

This year, all I can think about is the half joint of NUGGETRY OG that I didn’t have time to finish on the wait to the airport last week and is sitting the car waiting for me.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like the bud in Amsterdam is not good.  Sometimes even great.  But to be totally honest, it’s not even close to the bud we have in California.

I mean, to the average “head”, I am sure Super Lemon Haze, Chocolope or Vanilla Kush are knock out caliber strains.

But where I come from they are just okay.

In my opinion, the coffee shops and the growers/breeders in Amsterdam have been working with the same genetics for too long.  They really need to add some new blood to their lineup.

I am not kidding when I tell you that I must have smoked the same exact Haze cut 5 times and each time it had a different name: Amnesia Haze, S5 Haze, S5 Juice, Ultra Haze, Super Silver Haze.  Whatever.

It’s not like they don’t know what’s going on here in the States.

Perfect example is the new menu at The Greenhouse.  Right in the middle, on probably the most valuable piece of real estate on the page is a big section for the “new original varieties from USA!”

Imagine that, the biggest and baddest marijuana coffee shop in Amsterdam imports some of its genetics from America!

Not very long ago it would have been unheard of for a coffee shop in Amsterdam to be bragging about anything other than the Dutch strains we all know.

But now it seems like they are going out of their way to make sure customers know they have the same fire we are smoking in SoCal.

Medical Marijuana has really changed the game.

I know herb inside and out and I am 100% sure the strains that Arjan is calling his American Strains were not that. They were renamed dutch strains.

At my shop in San Diego, we consistently stock at least 10-15 strains that I would say are hands down better (much stronger, better tasting, better smelling) than ANYTHING I had in Amsterdam, even the Cup winning Super Lemon Haze.  (Actually, all our bud is better.)

I will definitely be attending the 2010 Cannabis Cup next year.  Amsterdam is an awesome city and has become our home away from home.

I just hope that Arjan, Derry, and all the other coffee shop owners read this and take it to heart because I have a feeling the economy is not the only reason attendance was down this year.  –Chubbs

Above: Amnesia Coffee Shop’s combo pack consisted of some LSD, Utopia Haze, Amnesia Lemon and some Shiraz. They also threw in some papers and tips as well as a lighter.

Each year High Times Magazine puts on an incredible competition where many of the most popular coffee shops in Amsterdam enter their best marijuana, neder hash and import hash and then you, the judge, get to sample their wares and give your own opinion. Last year’s the overall winner was coffee shop The Greenhouse with their incredibly strong sativa Super Lemon Haze.

I am expecting the 2009 Cannabis Cup to be just as fun as last years and was hoping to try and get a group of Marijuana Reviews members together at least once, preferably a few times to kick back and have a group review session.

If any of you are anticipating attending the 2009 Cannabis Cup please contact me as I will be putting together a list of members planning to go. The number of people coming will determine the location we use but I am thinking either Barney’s, The Greenhouse, or Amneisa.

Another idea I had was to do a bit of a mini Cannabis Cup where just us MR members pick a handful of coffee shops that we like and from there we do some really good, in depth reviews of their #1 bud and #1 hash. If this is something you think is a good idea and would like to come along let me know. If there are enough people interested I’ll see what I can do about contacting some coffee shops about special deals.

Honestly, no matter what we end up doing, the 2009 Cannabis Cup is sure to be that much more fun once a few members meet up. It’s always nice to put a face to the name. Especially over a nice cup of hot chocolate and a Volcano Bag full of Haze.

I realize I am bringing this up pretty early in the year but I just wanted to give anyone who may be considering going, or is on the fence about going, ample time to do some research and plan their trip.

I have already picked out 3 hotels and will be looking them over in detail later today. Most likely I’ll be reserving my room tonight.

Flights are another story. Right now airfare to Amsterdam is going to cost me a few hundred dollars less than it did last year. I have a feeling prices are going to drop even lower which is why I will be holding off for a couple more weeks before purchasing plane tickets. But even if you buy them right now, imo, you are getting a great deal.

Passes for the 2009 Cannabis Cup are on sale for $199 through June 1. After that they are $250 from 6/2 – 11/15/2009.  Passes at the door will run you $250 Euros. (The $199 and $250 presale prices are in both dollars and euros depending on where you live. At the door it’s Euros only).

As far as the format goes, I am not sure exactly what High Times has planned for this years Cup but I am sure it will be great. I admit, last year’s convention area was pretty lame so hopefully they will improve that for 2009.

Also, I have yet to see a list of the coffee shops that are competing in the 2009 Cannabis Cup but then again it is pretty early in the year.

Since I have a little more experience now that I have been to Amsterdam already, feel free to email any questions you might have about where to stay, what to bring, what are the laws, anything. If I can, I will help out for sure.

Last year the economy was on everyone’s mind but things were far from as bad as they are now. I am really curious to know whether or not that will effect the attendance of the 2009 Cannabis Cup. I have e feeling it’s going to be about the same as last year which was just right.

If there is one thing worth saving your money up for it’s a “best weed in the world” competition.

Press Pass Rejection

I contacted High Times to see if I could get press passes for the 2009 Cannabis Cup in an attempt to bring you guys some back stage/behind-the-scenes footage and such. Unfortunately I was told that they only give out press passes to magazines and television stations, no websites. Last year while I was picking up my pass, there was 2 guys there calling themselves a “crew” from some Japanese TV station and they were given press passes.

I GUARANTEE 100x more people that actually are interested in reading High Times and are possible subscribers to their magazine will be reading my reviews of the 2009 Cannabis Cup than will be watching a 20 minute spot on some Asian TV station. Especially since this year I plan on doing some real-time reporting as well as a daily update straight from Amsterdam instead of taking tons of pics/notes and posting everything when I get home. But whatever, I’m not bitter.

Walking into Softland I was expecting to be greeted with open arms as a 2008 Cannabis Cup judge. This was not the case. For some reason, Softland was listed as one of the coffee shops that had entered the Cannabis Cup but when I walked in and asked to see their entries, they said it was a mistake and that they were not taking part in The Cup.

The guy working there was pretty rude about the fact that people kept coming in and asking about them being involved. I explained that he was listed, and even showed him the list where it said ‘SOFTLAND’ but he didn’t care.

Either way I was there and I was going to get high. The shop itself is medium size with a bit of a flying saucer / what people in the 1950’s thought the future would look like kind of vibe. There is a lot of metal including on the floor, the ceiling, the tables. Even the 6 computers they have hooked up to the internet for customers to use are encased in metal.

There was a ton of construction going on right on front of the shop and I thought for sure that was going to hurt business but there was a bunch of people there hanging out. I was king of surprised actually

While I was there, they were playing some decent techno music, the norm it seems for most coffee shops. I am not sure why but the stars painted on the ceiling seemed to stand out.

After looking over the menu I decided to try the White Widow at appx. $13/G. The buds were light and fluffy and had a great smell.

We hung out at Softland for only about 20 minutes as we had a lot of site seeing to do that morning. It’s a pretty cool shop but to be honest, I’ll probably skip it the next time I am in Amsterdam. There just was not anything special about the shop to make me want to go back.  –Chubbs

Pros: Internet access, good selection, decent prices, location

Cons: Rude bud tender, not the strongest bud, Too much metal
