Walking into Softland I was expecting to be greeted with open arms as a 2008 Cannabis Cup judge. This was not the case. For some reason, Softland was listed as one of the coffee shops that had entered the Cannabis Cup but when I walked in and asked to see their entries, they said it was a mistake and that they were not taking part in The Cup.

The guy working there was pretty rude about the fact that people kept coming in and asking about them being involved. I explained that he was listed, and even showed him the list where it said ‘SOFTLAND’ but he didn’t care.

Either way I was there and I was going to get high. The shop itself is medium size with a bit of a flying saucer / what people in the 1950’s thought the future would look like kind of vibe. There is a lot of metal including on the floor, the ceiling, the tables. Even the 6 computers they have hooked up to the internet for customers to use are encased in metal.

There was a ton of construction going on right on front of the shop and I thought for sure that was going to hurt business but there was a bunch of people there hanging out. I was king of surprised actually

While I was there, they were playing some decent techno music, the norm it seems for most coffee shops. I am not sure why but the stars painted on the ceiling seemed to stand out.

After looking over the menu I decided to try the White Widow at appx. $13/G. The buds were light and fluffy and had a great smell.

We hung out at Softland for only about 20 minutes as we had a lot of site seeing to do that morning. It’s a pretty cool shop but to be honest, I’ll probably skip it the next time I am in Amsterdam. There just was not anything special about the shop to make me want to go back.  –Chubbs

Looks: Very small, light/whispy buds. Nothing to write home about.

Smell: Very potent spicy smell.

Taste: Very similar to the smell. Tasted a lot like the Lamb’s Bread I had a while back.

Buzz Type: Not 100% sure on the buzz as I could tell it was pretty weak bud and decided to smoke something a little more potent right after. Guessing it was typical Widow buzz. Kind of active with no burnout.

Buzz Length: Short.

Overall: Again, another poor example of a strain that is suppose to be hands down, one of the best you can smoke. We’ll see if I can find the real deal in the very near future.

Buzz Report: As I said, I don’t think I can give a 100% accurate buzz report because I ended up smoking some L.A. Confidential right after smoking the White Widow to ensure a good buzz.  –Chubbs

I am going to spend as much time reviewing The Noon as they spent taking care of me as a customer, very little.

A smaller coffee shop with a guy and his laptop in the back corner calling himself the DJ. Heavy locals only vibe. Not very welcoming at all.

Smoked some of their 2008 Cannabis Cup entry ‘S5 Haze’ which was about as impressive as the shop itself.

Looks: I was sold a weak gram that was made up of very little, very tight lime green buds with red/orange hairs.

Smell: Like a fresh batch of fruit punch Kool Aid.

Taste: The taste was probably the best thing about S5 Haze. Nice and light with a hint of lemon.

Buzz Type: The buzz was decent but it needed to last A LOT longer. Typical sativa buzz, nice and active cerebral buzz.

Buzz Length: Short. About an hour at most.

Overall: I hear that The Noon coffee shop is known for their Blueberry so I am not sure why they entered this strain. I was not a big fan of S5 Haze.

Buzz Report: Due to the lack on interest I had in The Noon I ended up smoking S5 Haze at De Tweede Kamer and was lucky I did. The buzz was very short and needed help from some L.A. Confidential.  –Chubbs

Type: Polm I believe. Imported from Africa I am told.

Price: Appx. $16/G

Looks: Nice light brown, bordering on red. Semi compressed and very sticky.

Smell: Like normal hash which is flowers with some incense mixed in. Shiraz also had a little bit of a chocolate smell to it.

Taste: Smooth, light smoke that never made me cough. Very nice.

Buzz Type: Hard hitting face warming type of buzz. I bought a glass pipe just for this hash and it was definitely a wise purchase.

Buzz Length: Medium. About 1.5 hours. Not quite as long as some of the other hash varieties I smoked.

Overall: For the price I think Shriaz is a great deal. In my opinion it earned the 3rd place trophy it was awarded.

Buzz Report: One of the many ways to start the morning right in Amsterdam is to head over to Amnesia and fire a gram or 2 of Shiraz. With it’s energetic buzz it’ll get you going.  –Chubbs

Type: Polm (African I believe)

Looks: Very nice reddish brown color. Chunks fall apart very easily.

Smell: Very fragrant. Like fresh cut flowers with a hint of some spice.

Taste: Wow, this stuff hits you hard. The taste is similar to the smell only it has a bit of a resin flavor as well.

Buzz Type: Immediate head rush that is followed by a great energetic buzz.

Buzz Length: Long. I was high for a good 2.5 hours after 1 bowl.

Overall: I was definitely impressed. Not as good as the Greenhouse Ice, but definitely a contender. Worth the Cup that it earned for sure.

Buzz Report: You ever have one of those days where you smoke so much weed/hash that around noon you realize you cannot focus no matter how hard you try? Greenhouse Super Polm had me feeling that way by 8:00am   –Chubbs

Located around the corner from the 420 Cafe in the northern end of Amsterdam is a little coffee shop called Betty Boop. I asked around but could not get a straight answer as to why the place was named Betty Boop so I am guessing the owner is a really big fan of the cartoon.

Betty Boop is a smaller shop that has electric doors that automatically slide open as you approach them. A feature I really liked. Makes it possible to keep your hands in your pockets when it’s freezing cold outside. We had heard that the their entry for the 2008 Cannabis Cup was called Sage and that it cost $25 euros per gram. Most of the weed I had been smoking cost anywhere from $8-15 euros per gram so I was definitely interested to see this Sage.

As I predicted, the people that told us about the Sage had the prices mixed up and it only cost $10 euros per gram. Which if you ask me was 5 euros too much. You can read the review for more info. but take my word, it’s no good.

The shop itself is nothing to write home about either. As I said it’s pretty small, I’d guess there is enough seating for 20 people. The selection they had was nice, but paled in comparison to some of the other coffee shops I visited. I would be willing to give them another shot, maybe in the summer to see if the quality of their smoke is any different. Or maybe someone reading this who has been to Betty Boop can comment and let us know what they think.

I have a feeling Betty Boop is one of the shops that just entered a strain in the 2008 Cannabis Cup in order to take advantage of the extra business they receive as a result of being listed on the contestants map. I don’t think they were really trying to win anything. At least not with the bud that I smoked, it was mids at best.

Don’t get me wrong, if I had not other choice I could spend all day sitting in Betty Boop smoking all they have to offer. But when you are in Amsterdam for The Cup and you have shops like The Greenhouse and Barney’s going all-out, it’s kind of frustrating when you take the time to find a place, spend your hard earned money to buy their sample and then find out that it’s not that stony.

I try not to judge a place whether it be a coffee shop of a medical marijuana dispensary by my first visit. But for now that is all I have to go one. Until I make my way back to Amsterdam and give Betty Boop another look, I am going to have to give them a solid B+.  –Chubbs

Looks: Looks good. Nice buds with a golden sheen. Tightly wound orange hairs.

Smell: Smells like a bag of freshly cut grass. Reminded me of a nice lawn.

Taste: Pretty much just like it smelled. Not good at all.

Buzz Type: Immediately felt the buzz. Forhead got a little warm like I was about to be hit with something good but then nothing happened.

Buzz Length: Short.

Overall: After the hype that was built up around this expensive weed by this couple we met at the 420 Cafe, I was completely let down by the actual bud.

Buzz Report: After smelling the herb I new it was not going to be very potent. I ended up grinding up the entire nug and rolling it up with some Greenhouse Ice I had left over from earlier in the day. The Ice saved the day for sure.  –Chubbs

Looks: Like a piece of a ginger snap cookie.

Smell: Very fresh, floral, incense aroma.

Taste: Like fresh flowers at first then it got a little harsh. Luckily the Sweet Tooth I had it mixed with saved the day.

Buzz Type: When mixed with Sweet Tooth the buzz was incredibly uplifting. I was amped all the way through the airport, right onto the plane.

Buzz Length: Not sure, I totally crashed and burned once I sat down on the plane. Was WRECKED after a week of hard partying.

Overall: I think had I spent the time to sit down and smoke Twizzla correctly it would have earned an “A” instead of an “A-” . Maybe someone else who has tried it can comment on their experience.

Buzz Report: It took me about 20 minutes to smoke a joint that was rolled with 1 gram of Twizzla and 1 gram of Sweet Tooth. I was happily baked. Buzz would of lasted all morning had I not been leaving Amsterdam.  –Chubbs
