Located around the corner from the 420 Cafe in the northern end of Amsterdam is a little coffee shop called Betty Boop. I asked around but could not get a straight answer as to why the place was named Betty Boop so I am guessing the owner is a really big fan of the cartoon.
Betty Boop is a smaller shop that has electric doors that automatically slide open as you approach them. A feature I really liked. Makes it possible to keep your hands in your pockets when it’s freezing cold outside. We had heard that the their entry for the 2008 Cannabis Cup was called Sage and that it cost $25 euros per gram. Most of the weed I had been smoking cost anywhere from $8-15 euros per gram so I was definitely interested to see this Sage.
As I predicted, the people that told us about the Sage had the prices mixed up and it only cost $10 euros per gram. Which if you ask me was 5 euros too much. You can read the review for more info. but take my word, it’s no good.
The shop itself is nothing to write home about either. As I said it’s pretty small, I’d guess there is enough seating for 20 people. The selection they had was nice, but paled in comparison to some of the other coffee shops I visited. I would be willing to give them another shot, maybe in the summer to see if the quality of their smoke is any different. Or maybe someone reading this who has been to Betty Boop can comment and let us know what they think.
I have a feeling Betty Boop is one of the shops that just entered a strain in the 2008 Cannabis Cup in order to take advantage of the extra business they receive as a result of being listed on the contestants map. I don’t think they were really trying to win anything. At least not with the bud that I smoked, it was mids at best.
Don’t get me wrong, if I had not other choice I could spend all day sitting in Betty Boop smoking all they have to offer. But when you are in Amsterdam for The Cup and you have shops like The Greenhouse and Barney’s going all-out, it’s kind of frustrating when you take the time to find a place, spend your hard earned money to buy their sample and then find out that it’s not that stony.
I try not to judge a place whether it be a coffee shop of a medical marijuana dispensary by my first visit. But for now that is all I have to go one. Until I make my way back to Amsterdam and give Betty Boop another look, I am going to have to give them a solid B+. –Chubbs
Grade: B+
Pros: Location, Cool Front Doors
Cons: Low Quality Weed – Need I say more.

Is that you in front of the shop in the first pic?
H1JACK3R: No, that’s the waiter from the steak joint next door.
It’s very common to see waiters standing out in front of their restaurant talking or having a cig. Sometimes they try and hustle you inside.
if it has low quality weed why is it rated B+ the weed is what it is about.
herbavore: Well because the coffee shops serve more than weed.
But for the most part I do agree with you. I normally do not review a shop based on 1 visit but since I am not going to be in Amsterdam any time soon I gave them the benefit of the doubt.
Cant stand this place. Got in an argument with the budtender. Always heard that the blueberry was fire here but after scoopin some, I realized it was your basic schwag. Avoid this place if you can. Not on point with the modern day coffeeshops in the Dam like Barneys, or a Dampkring outfit.
Hi,
I’m a customer of the Betty Boop and I would like to clarify some minor things mentioned in your review.
First of all it’s pretty confusing that you are talking about Euros using the dollar signs. (The rate is certainly not 1:1)
If you check your picture of the menu you see that they did not ask more than 12 Euros for Sage.
I do remember that they have been selling a dollar note looking packaged ice-o-lator which was 25 each.
Please don’t get me wrong – I like your review, but facts should be facts. I guess it’s sometimes hard to read notes after getting sober
The good thing in Amsterdam is that there are so many shops that everyone should be able to find his/her preferred one.
I personally prefer independent shops to those chains like greenhouse. The quality may vary, but those small shop are doing an amazing job within their capabilities. Did you know that it is not legal to grow/buy more than 5 Grams @ once? Every time they take a big risk to supply us with the nice or not so nice stuff.
Greetz from A’dam!

wrong adress, wrong tel.no. wrong openinghours ,wrong prices where you realy in that place? or dit you got youre info after smoking the sage
lol… this is a horrible review. all the information is wrong and to even compare it to the grasshopper is sad. the grasshopper chains SUCK and the pot their is geared towards tourists. bettyboop has great smoke and friendly staff. i stayed right across the street on my last visit and always found myself returning. even after many trips to barneys, anyday, grasshopper 1&2, bulldog, (or insert other popular names here). also, i smoked from several places and bettyboop was one of the top imho.
their chocolope was outstanding
This ws our first coffeeshop we visited back in 2000, this was my first trip to amdam, and also the cannabis cup. Our hotel , the crown plaza ,was right around the corner, I remember i got jack herer ,and some keif. It was decent , but not the best amdam has to offer by any means, If i return to amdam, i will be visiting betty boop again , mostly for nostalgia reasons, but it was an ok shop. And the girl working was hot
just returned from amsterdam this morning. betty boop is the coffee shop i visit first and many times throughout my visits every time. good cheap coffee, freshly squeezed oj, good music, and a good selection on the menu, not the best in amsterdam, but certainly not the worst. the same friendly staff each time.
never seen weed or hash @ 25 euro a gram in betty boop and i have frequented it for seven years! i think marc was right, (above) iso lator more like.
like pretty much all coffeshops in amsterdam, if you are polite and curtious you will have a nice time.
people do not understand that it is NOT LEGAL to smoke weed or hash in amsterdam, it is NOT LEGAL for a ‘coffeeshop’ to hold or sell or even allow you to smoke on the premises! amsterdam is not a bust free zone despite popular belief, but it is tolerated.
after spending 12.20 euro on 2 cans of coke and a paper cup of diet coke in the grasshopper, the smaller coffeeshops just off Damrak are sure winners, Betty Boop rating quite highly.
There chocolope was diffinetly a great bud but when a top marijuana expert who knows what he is smoking says this wasnt the best coffeeshop or marijuana im going to have to agree with him. When i went to visit i was not very happy after having glamourous visions of amsterdam this was a let down. The top floor was wooden seats and very boring. The bottom floor was a decent bud bar but the marijuana was not as great as i expected. And when i finished smoking my chocolope joint and asked to use the volcano they gave me a dirty look but agreed. Not impressed. Coffee shop ben is much better as with Green house and so on.
