I had read so many good things about Amnesia prior to going to Amsterdam that I started to think that they may be too good to be true. So needless to say when my wife and I happened upon the shop one afternoon while out for a little walk, I just had to see what all the hype was about.
Amnesia definitely lived up to it’s online reputation. Right as we walked in I caught a whiff of a very sweet strain that drew my attention straight to the bar. My wife grabbed a table and I struck up a conversation with Sara Jane, the bud tender.
She was incredibly cool even offering to let me come back one morning before they opened so I could take pictures for MR. Unfortunately the one morning I was able to come by early enough, I was in such a hurry (will explain later) that I did not have time to take any pictures. Either way I thought it was very nice of just to offer. Turns out Sara Jane happened to be working each time we visited Amnesia and welcomed us with a smile and hello. It was quite nice actually.
Inside Amnesia is similar to most shops in the way that the seating is arranged. A lot of the buildings are alike as far as their architecture goes. One story, narrow, deep rooms with couches along 1 wall. Maybe 5 or 7 tables with 10 or 12 chairs opposite the couches. Immediately to your right as you enter the shop is their Volcano bar which is where the 3 house Volcano vaporizers sit. Just to the left of the Vape bar is the bud bar. Amnesia is known for selling quality weed and hash and I was stoked to be able to finally try some for myself.
For the 2008 Cannabis Cup, Amnesia had put together what they called “The Cup Mix” which was a sample of each of their entries. It consisted of a half gram of LSD, Amnesia Lemon, Utopia Haze and Shiraz (Review Coming Soon) all for a little over $30 (25 Euro). Amnesia works together with Barney’s which is why they included some Utopia Haze in the mix.
Since I had both me and my wife’s Cannabis Cup passes I was able to buy two Cup Mixes and was it ever worth it. The Amnesia Lemon was so good. And the Utopia Haze ended up taking 2nd overall so it was a great deal. I dropped the $20 deposit they require to use a house bong (some of the cleanest house bongs in Amsterdam) and went to town.
Overall we had a really chill experience in Amsterdam. There were a few little things here and there that made it a little “exciting”. My wife and I spent one afternoon doing a bunch of touristy stuff. One of which was going to the Vincent Van Gogh Museum. It takes a little over an hour to walk through the entire museum and at the end there is a really cool gift shop. My wife really like Van Gogh so she spent a few bucks and got some cool souvenirs. After leaving the museum, we went straight to Amnesia and pretty much spent the rest of the night partying there.
The next morning we wake up and realize my wife left the gift bag from The Van Gogh Museum hanging on the back of her chair at Amnesia. We had some really cool gifts and a few personal items in the bag so I decided to walk over to Amnesia and see if by some lucky chance the bag was still there. Being from California, I was 100% sure that someone walked off with it. I mean, here in S. California it’s not too bad but realistically if you leave something sitting somewhere for more than an hour, it’s gone.
When I got to Amnesia it was about 30 minutes before they opened. I saw Sara Jane inside getting ready for the day and knocked on the door. She waved as if to say hello, come back later. I kept knocking and finally she came over to see what I wanted. I explained to her what happened and she said that my wife’s bag had been turned in by a guest at the end of the night.
I was shocked. Not only did they still have our stuff, but when I got back to the hotel room and looked closer at the bag, there was a bunch of stuff like a beanie and some sun glasses that were not even ours. I felt like it was karma that I got our stuff back so I was sure to head back to Amnesia and return the items that did not belong to us. Anyway the moral of the story is, don’t go to museums when you could be sitting in a coffee shop.

Sounds like a real nice place.
Seems like one of the better reviews so far.
Two-One: Yeah, place rocked.
What about he review makes it “better” if you don’t mind me asking. Longer, more detailed, etc. ? Just wondering so I can possibly improve future reviews.
I just saying the place sounded better than other ones. Not that this review was better than the last.
I do like detailed bud reviews. But thats just me. Just a little more detailed.
Just my 2 cents.
Gotcha. I’ll see what I can do about some more info. included in the reviews. Maybe change things up a bit for version 2.0.
Also, just if I see a very nice looking bud review that I like. Nothing special about the review or anything I will say is a good review just because I think it seems like really good bud.
Staff is extremely friendly here. It is is run by a woman named Sissy who is married to Derry, the owner of Barney’s. It is also a 30 second walk from the grey area so its easy to spend an entire day going back and forth between the two.
My hotel on my last trip was right in that same neighborhood which was VERY convenient.
Sounds like a great coffee shop. Is the deposit standard at most shops? what kind of glass do they offer?
Amnesia is the only shop that asked me for a deposit.
I used house bongs in about 10 coffee shops.
wow, I really want to take a trip some time. I love reading about your time their, sounds like you guys had an incredible trip. I am on the east coast so it’s even closer for me
drewzilla484: Man being on the east coast is such an advantage imo. I spent half a day traveling before I was even over the Atlantic Ocean.
nice pictures Chubbs, I’ve had the pleasure of visiting Amnesia a few times, it’s a great place to have a smoke.
Saul: I can’t wait until I am there in the summer and can sit outside and enjoy a nice fatty.
I’ll be sitting right next to you Chubbs
Sounds great! I booked my flight to Amsterdam earlier today and i will absolutely be going here as soon as i set foot in Amsterdam this June
Tom: De Tweede Kamer, Amnesia, Barney’s or The Greenhouse. Can’t go wrong strating a trip to Amsterdam off at any of these 4 coffee shops imo.
i call it home!;) nice people nice vibe nice menu!
@TWIZZLA: Agree 100% Definitely a great spot to chill.
As far as coffeeshops go I have a couple of suggestions:
Don’t go to barneys (the food is excellent, but the weed is overpriced)…
Since I’m from Amsterdam I’ve had the oppertunity to take a lifetime finding the best ones…. here goes:
The Noon, De Eerste hulp, De Tweede kamer, the Rookies and Amnesia.
Ohh and a tip for the tourists, usually the coffeeshops in smaller alleys and streets are way cheaper and give good service as opposed to the ones in the big streets because they’re geared towards tourists, the smaller shops are geared towards locals (the difference being that tourists don’t have a proper frame of reference and locals do, so in order to keep the locals they have to conform to local prices).
Amnesia is lucky to have such a great team of workers.
Especially that Israeli guy whose very good English and social skills are literally making the customers to feel like at home.
Cheers u Kobi,man!
This is by far the best coffeeshop in the Dam – period! I spent the happiest 2 weeks of my life in there!
I’ve been lucky to spend time in most of the coffee shops, but this one is the one that 5 minutes turns into 5 hours.
The Bud was superb, the staff were amazing and friendly and the lemony drink that they make up for you is like nectar. Goes very well with a Lemon Amnesia Spliff….or seven!
i’ve been smoking for 40 years. started in europe with hash.
i asked for some top dawg and the buds were small, so i upgraded to utopia (buds were also small).
This is no where near the quality of smoke i get at home and it’s 30% higher in price.
I’d say the stuff was closer to the quality of $10/gr.
I usually get BC bud and although it’s skunkier than hell, it’s stuff that produces results.
A bit of a disappointment in the smoke in amsterdam
I even tried mixed it with some hash from dampking at 20E a gram and that still didn’t measure up.
BTW: I hadn’t had joint in a week either????
come to canada for weed I guess.
Why go to Canada when we have the same stuff here in Cali yet we have a better weather pattern to grow outdoors.
